Safety Tips for Drivers
The first few weeks of school often bring increased traffic and new routines. Help keep students safe by remembering to:
- Slow down in school zones and obey posted speed limits.
- Watch for children crossing streets, especially near schools, neighborhoods, and bus stops.
- Put away distractions and stay focused on the road.
- Stop for school buses when required by law and never pass a bus displaying its stop arm and flashing red lights.
- Allow extra travel time during the morning and afternoon commute, as traffic may be heavier than usual.
Safety Tips for Students and Families
Parents and caregivers can help children build safe habits before the first day of school.
- Use sidewalks whenever available and cross only at designated crosswalks.
- Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.
- Stay alert by keeping phones and headphones put away while walking or biking.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing if walking or biking during low-light hours.
- Always wear a properly fitted helmet when riding a bicycle, scooter, or skateboard.
- Talk with your child about stranger awareness and the importance of following their planned route to and from school.
